<DM> We are introduced to Foster, in what seems to be a case of mistaken identity. * Vita has joined #ddi <DM> Kel'duin, the Elf, disappeared in search of their Orc captive. <Vita> |context 20 <DM> Talking to the local magistrate has only turned up more questions. <DM> Foster seems to know something about Apol's past. <DM> Foster also seems to know something about the [crumpled parchment] <DM> But I don't know if he knows that or he's just hmming, because I don't remember what I told him. <Foster> I believe I do. <DM> Erias hears nothing about his compatriot, and is directed towards the new Temple. <DM> Sam is experiencing a crisis of identity. <Fordran> He goes to the tavern and gets drunk for most of the episode. <DM> Vita, upon hearing about capture and possible enslavement by brigands, wants to help, but otherwise, is trying to figure things out. <DM> Fordran is... well, it's complicated. He had this dream, see. <DM> Good enough? <Foster> works for me <Vita> sure <Erias> okay <Apol> "So.. Where is this Argus?" * Vita stands around, trying to figure things out <DM> * Welcome to World of Randolph. You have 0 new messages. DDI Message of the day is "Full Moon tonight. You feel lucky." set by DM at... * Fordran is complicated. <Foster> "He runs an antique shop out on the outskirts of town. We were heading there, correct?" <Fordran> "Sure. Is it on the way to the new temple?" <Erias> (were the outskirts where the temple is?) <Fordran> (that would be keen) <Fordran> (or vorpal) <Apol> "Yes, please." "So, Foster, right? Wanna hear a joke, huh? huh?" <Foster> (I don't recall. Enlighten me, Bearer of Infinite Knowledge.) <DM> The Antique shop is in the Laborer's district, the Temple is in the Market district. IIRC. <Erias> "The temple is my main interest. But I don't mind going by the shop first." (or we can partysplit. yay!) <Foster> "Let's hear your joke, mysterious flying creature." * pst slinks into the corner <Apol> "What do moths study in school?" * Apol flies around Foster in glee. * Foster ponders. <Foster> "You have me at a loss, I wasn't aware that moths had schools." <DM> The group mills towards quarry road, in the Laborer's district. <Apol> "Oh they do! And they study Mothematics!" * Vita follows the others blindly * Fordran sighs. * Erias walks toward the laborer's district, assuming that charisma-gravity will pull -- yeah, that. * DM fails a Will save. * Fordran mills about. <Foster> (The Wrath of God hits! The Wrath of God hits! Would you like your possessions identified?) <DM> Sam: "I'm uh, going to go find a pub, okay?" * DM sets mode: +o Vita <Foster> "There's a few up that street there. <Foster> "They can be kind of rough, though." <Fordran> "Uh... sure. Maybe you can meet up with that Elf, when he gets back, and tell him where we went." * Foster gestures. <DM> Sam: "Okay. Um. Right." <Erias> "Be careful, Sam. I'm not sure the Elf would wait for formal justice." <Vita> "I don't really drink among the... um... big peolpe..." <Fordran> "Maybe you should buy him a drink." *pause* "Do Elves drink?" * Vita sighs a little and looks away <Erias> "I think everybody drinks." <Vita> "I thought some religious orders forbade drink" <Fordran> (i can check that!) <Apol> "I have drinks!" *Brings out the little bottle of poison to share* "It's good for the brain. At least that's what Bob said." <Erias> (oh, me too) <DM> Quarry road curves up ahead. Near the end squats a two-story stone-and-wood building with a cracked painting of an ancient Sunnian urn. <Erias> |roll d20+4 <tafal> 11 | [d20=7] [+4=4] <DM> For... those of you who know some geography anyway. <Erias> "I think that might be true, yeah." <Fordran> |roll d20+9 <tafal> 25 | [d20=16] [+9=9] <Erias> (that was knowledge: religion, getting only typical knowledge) <Fordran> "[Correct answer regarding drinking and religions]" * Foster leads the way inside. <DM> Erias: Pelor allows wine, mostly. * Erias follows Foster. * Vita continues to blindly follow peolpe * Fordran follows Erias. <DM> Fordran: You know, interestingly, many Sunnian sects have a particular attitude towards alcohol... <Foster> "Oh. Try not to break anything." * Vita leaves Pup outside <DM> A low, pleasant chime sounds at the opening of the door. * Erias blinks and looks up. * Apol lands on Erias' backpack. <DM> A voice from the rear of the shop says something muffled. * Fordran looks around nervously, trying not to touch anything. <Erias> "Excuse me, sir... or possible ma'am...?" <DM> A kindly looking old human gentleman walks out from behind a curtain. <DM> "Good day." <DM> "Ah!" <DM> "Mr. Foster, you've brought some friends." <Foster> "So I have. I think one of them is an acquaintance of the Bobdalimus you were talking about." * Foster gestures to Apol * Apol flies over and lands on the counter. * Apol bows. <Apol> "Martivir. Wux *ocuir* vethithurirlevethix Bob?" <DM> "Ahh... Well, hello there. Are you Apollonaridictys?" * Fordran looks over some dusty scrolls and tomes, and a small deck of cards. <Apol> "Axun!" <DM> "Well, someone's been looking for you." * Vita carefully makes her way over to a corner where she is the least likely to disturb anything <Apol> "Really? ooh!ohhh! Bob?" * Erias continues watching the exchange. * Apol hops from foot to foot. <DM> "A uh... Bobdalimus the Arcanist, I believe." <DM> "Callie dealt with him, I'm not sure what he looks like, I'm afraid." <Fordran> "...Dealt with?" * Apol looks at Fordran, catching the tone and mimics "..Dealt with?" <DM> For those of you examining your surroundings, the shop is kind of dusty, and lit only from the large windows in front. There are some low, hip-height tables with various antiques and knick-knacks on them, as well as shelving around the walls, with assorted things out and in jars. * Vita stands on her tiptoes, trying to look at things on the tables <DM> "Yes, he came in one day when I was out taking tea with some Olidimarran archaeologists, so I only received the note when I got back." <Fordran> "Oh. Who's Callie?" <DM> "Oh. My apologies. Callie is my wife." <Apol> "Bob gethrisj throden eorike. What did note say?" <Erias> "And why aren't you sure what he looks like?" <DM> Argus smiles and searches his counter for the note. <DM> He holds the note out to Apol. * Apol takes the note and starts to read. <DM> It describes a ruddy-brown flying lizard, answering to the name 'Apol.' <DM> The name 'Bobdalimus the Arcanist' is scrawled across the top <DM> To Erias: "As I said, I wasn't here, and Callie can be rather vague if it's not a statuary or something." He smiles at this. <Apol> "hmmm... that's my name and Bob's name." *mumbles* <Fordran> "Did Bob... ah, Bobdalimus say where he'd went? Or if he's coming back?" * Apol takes out the monocle. * Apol returns the monocle and sighs. <DM> "Oh. He was here only last week. I think he was coming back at some point." <Fordran> "Ah. Well. That's good, I suppose." <Erias> "Apol, are you alright?" <Apol> "Bob had no jobs for Apol? He didn't leave anything?" <DM> To Apol: "Maybe you should speak with Callie." <DM> "If you'll come back tomorrow afternoon, she'll be back from her sister's. * Fordran looks at Erias and shrugs. <DM> "She might remember something else, then. I'm sorry that I only have what she's written here." <Apol> "Ok." * Fordran looks around. * Apol mumbles about Bob being more chatty and writey than that note. <DM> Sees the looking around. "May I interest you in anything?" <Erias> "You can come with us to the temple in the meantime. It'll keep you occupied." * Erias smiles... uh... welcomingly. * Vita shakes her head silently, then realizes that the old man hadn't really noticed her anyway <Apol> To Erias: "Ok." *Brightens up* "Maybe Bob is in there!" <Fordran> "Not particularly... just looking." <DM> "Scrolls perhaps? We have some potions in the back. I don't think they expire..." * Foster chuckles * Apol looks around distractedly... unable to decide if the glowies or looking for Bob is more important. <Fordran> "No, but thank you. I suppose we should get going, then?" <DM> "Oh yes, this job came in, Mr. Foster, maybe your friends would be interested." <Erias> "Yes, I'd like to visit the temple before [time that is soon]." <Fordran> (hey, he has a ! over his head now!) <Foster> "Oh?" <Apol> "Mr. Argus, you don't need that thing with the bells over there do you? The ram thing with bells? If you don't need it, I can take care of it for you." <DM> "The temple had some trouble with some pests in the sewers, I'm sure you can ask them about it if you're headed that way anyway." <DM> Argus smiles at Apol and chuckles. <DM> "I've been using it as a doorbell." <Apol> "Aww. Ok." * Apol flies up to it and shakes the bells. * Vita wonders where Apol puts things, anyway * Erias looks at Foster and shrugs. "I'm sure we can help them out if they need it. <Erias> " <DM> Argus' hands twitch as he winces. <Fordran> "Apol... maybe you shouldn't play with that." * Apol has a little pack specially designed for flying lizards around the waist. <Foster> "It's something to do. We'll see when we get there, I guess." <Fordran> "Thank you for your time, Argus. We'll be back tomorrow." * Vita notices the pack and chuckles at herself. Of course Apol would have something like that. <Foster> "We should probably be going. Something tells me that the Church of the Eternal Orb isn't so big on night services." <DM> "Very good, uh..." <Fordran> "I'm sorry. Fordran." * Fordran extends his hand. <DM> "Mr. Fordran." *shakes* <Erias> "Erias." * Erias does likewise. <DM> "Mr. Erias." *shakes* <Apol> "Earenk! Martivir!" <DM> "Argus C'tchala." * Erias turns to go. <DM> "Yes, yes, please come back soon, little one." *smiles* <DM> "Good day to all of you." * Fordran looks around once more, eyes passing over the dust-covered Helm of Opposite Alignment, and follows Erias. * Vita takes her leave quickly and pulls Pup to her side, whispering to him <Foster> "Thanks again for the job referral, Argus. Be seeing you." <DM> "Good day, Mr. Foster." <Erias> (mmm... could I just try that helm on for a minute?) <Fordran> (suuuure) * Fordran steps outside. * Foster exits last. <DM> (Right. The shopkeeper inherits your belongings.) <Fordran> (what time is it now?) <DM> Probably a little before noon <Erias> "Right." <Fordran> "Ah, midday." * Erias orients himself, turns toward the market district. <Erias> "Let's go." <Apol> (S, S, S, S, W) * Foster follows along. <Fordran> (N,W,S,W) <DM> (sec phone) <Erias> (L, R, L, R, ...) * Vita mounts up on Pup * Apol flies along. <Apol> "Oh hey... Knock Knock!" * Fordran looks at Erias. <Foster> "Who's calling?" <Apol> "Freeze" * Erias takes a breath. <Foster> "Freeze is an odd name." <Apol> "No, no, you are supposed to say 'Freeze who?" <Apol> "Come on." *smile* "This is a really good one!" <Foster> "Your humor is strange, but I suppose. Freeze who?" * Apol sings loudly, "Freeze a jolly good fellow ~!" <DM> Nyaaaargh. * Erias somehow continues walking, looking resiliently cheerful. <DM> I just want you to know that she doesn't tell me these first. <Ian> (Ian does down screaming) * Vita winces, obviously in physical pain <Fordran> "I think you even made Pelor groan, Apol." <Apol> "Is that a good thing? Should I do it some more?" * Foster looks unphased. * Vita mutters "Oh sweet Ehlonna no" <DM> As you approach from the North, you can see the Temple plaza glinting brightly in the sun. <Fordran> "Now that looks nice." * Vita squints in the glare <DM> There's quite a bit of foot traffic <Foster> "It's a bit posh, yes." * Apol becomes totally distracted by the bling.. (I mean..) glowies. <DM> The plaza is done in a white polished stone, with their symbol inlaid in bright shiny metal. * Fordran looks for the symbol. <Fordran> (oh.) <Fordran> (found it.) <Fordran> "How new is this church, Erias?" <Foster> (The symbol says "BLING") <DM> The Temple of the Eternal Orb is recently constructed, from the looks of things. <DM> The marble is unweathered, the gilt is untarnished. <DM> It looks *rather* expensive. <Erias> "We only heard about it perhaps a month ago." <Erias> (that's a guess, DM) <Fordran> "They certainly have... lavish... means." <DM> The temple itself is about three stories tall, and the steps lead up half a story <DM> (Erias: Good enough) <DM> From the outside, it looks to be basically a single large area of worship, partitioned with some space in the back (probably rooms for the clergy, offices, and the like) behind the altar. <Vita> "Like the glittergold temple... but maybe with less illusion?" <Erias> "I'm sure they have their hearts in the right place." <DM> (Beneath the ribcage?) <Fordran> "I hope so." <Foster> "They'd be rather dead if their hearts were in wrong place, no?" <DM> It looks like there's a midday service. <Foster> "I mean, I guess a sufficiently powerful arcanist could..." <Fordran> "I suggest being on your guard, Erias. My instinct tells me that we may not be safe. That dream I had, I mean." * Erias looks at Foster, frowns briefly. "I suppose so." * Foster trails off into mumbles and sketches some equations in the air, nodding in a satisfied fashion. <Erias> "You're right, Fordran. Thank you." <Vita> "Dream?" * Erias resolves to be on his guard, with purely flavortext effects. <Fordran> "I had a dream... about this symbol. Perhaps I shouldn't talk about it here. In front of the temple." <Foster> "Well, in any case, they have work for people, and I could use some. If you folks could use the money, I'd welcome the help." <Erias> "Everyone just be careful, alright?" <Fordran> (is the service about to start or end?) <Vita> "Um... ok..." <DM> Starting, it looks like. * Vita realizes that she's taking the advice about almost complete strangers about complete strangers, and shrugs * Erias looks at Fordran for a moment. "I think we'd be happy to help." <Fordran> "Looks like the service is about to start. Perhaps we should sit in." * Vita discreetly feels at her belt pouch <Erias> I'll approach the temple and see if there's any obvious place to go sit <DM> There's standing room in the back, behind the pews. <Vita> "I... guess... it couldn't hurt" <DM> There's still room. <Fordran> "Assuming they're open to other non-opposing religions." * Apol likes the sound of "money." <Erias> (/me discreetly feels at Vita's belt pouch <Erias> ) * Foster loiters against a wall somewhere. * Erias beckons and walks toward the standing room. * Erias tries not to clank. * Fordran follows Erias, as quietly as medium armor lets him. * Vita takes a wall * Vita stops Pup from trying to enter with her * Vita enters very quietly <DM> The congregation is made up of mostly common folk, it seems, though there are a couple of more well-dressed townsfolk near the front. * Apol wonders about going in and decides to sit on Fordran's pack. <DM> A couple of them near the back turn at the sound of your approach, double-taking at the armor nervously. <Fordran> (of course, Erias' armor basically says P E L O R on it) <DM> Yeees. * Foster blends. <DM> But there's the whole "armed and armored man amongst unarmed peasants" thing. <Erias> true. <Fordran> And how. <DM> It seems... to be... a funeral? Or a baptism. <Foster> (I'm just zis guy, you know! Not a weapon in sight, shabby robes, etc) <Erias> in case anyone else doesn't know, I'm wearing a very well-made, bright tabard of Pelor over my armor <DM> There's a man in loose white linen lying on the altar, unmoving. <DM> But the feel in here isn't of mourning, but expectation. * Erias feels an explicable sense of worry. * Fordran looks around, somewhat nervously. * Foster watches the altar. * Apol looks at the ceremony intently. <DM> An earnest-looking human in his mid-30s, wearing a richly emroidered white robe stands behind the altar, facing the congregation, speaking out. * Vita tries to discretely hop up and down, not seeing much <DM> "... where he shall rejoin the Orb for all Eternity. Glory in the Light." <DM> The congregation murmurs "Glory in the Light." <DM> He turns to the right (his right) expectantly. * Erias takes 10 on a wisdom check. <Erias> (quietly) "Uh..." * Vita mouths words if it seems to be expected <DM> A younger man comes out, in a brown robe, similarly embroidered, carrying a carafe of clear liquid, glowing with an inner light. * Vita hops <DM> It's not mundane. <Fordran> (knowledge religion check?) * Erias gets ready to restrain Apol. <DM> (Fordran: okay) <Foster> |roll d20+5 <tafal> 14 | [d20=9] [+5=5] <Fordran> |roll d20+9 <tafal> 25 | [d20=16] [+9=9] <Foster> (showoff) <Fordran> (i try) <Erias> |roll d20+4 <tafal> 9 | [d20=5] [+4=4] <Erias> woo! * Apol quickly takes out the monocle and whispers "ohhhhh. What is that? So shiny." * Fordran whispers, "It's probably holy water." * Apol looks at everything in the temple. * Erias whispers, "Apol, stay here." <DM> The younger robed man hands the carafe to the elder man, who pours some out into a golden goblet. <DM> The congregation seems to hold its breath. <Apol> "Ok. ok. He is glowing and so is the box that still munthrek is on." <Fordran> "Munthrek?" <DM> The priest holds the goblet out, slightly above his head and intones, "Eternal Glory in the Light," and begins pouring it onto the prone figure. * Erias looks conflicted. * Vita hops * Foster whispers "Human." to Fordran. <DM> He stops pouring. <DM> You start to see glimmering in the air around the body. <DM> It starts getting brighter, then in the next few moments, the body swirls into a glimmer of sparks, drifting vaguely upwards, before disappearing into the air. * Vita would normally lean forward if she was standing still, but since she's hopping she kind of tilts and has to pull herself back <Fordran> "Uh..." <DM> No trace of the body is left, the robe remains. * Fordran looks at Erias. * Vita narrows her eyes, looking for the illusion * Apol blinks and looks through the monocle again. <Vita> *hop hop hop* <Erias> (quietly) "Could anyone tell if he was alive?" <Fordran> "Not from here." <DM> Spot checks. <Vita> |roll d20+11 <tafal> 18 | [d20=7] [+11=11] <Fordran> |roll d20+3 <tafal> 19 | [d20=16] [+3=3] <Foster> |roll d20+1 <Erias> |roll d20+1 <tafal> 3 | [d20=2] [+1=1] <tafal> 17 | [d20=16] [+1=1] <Erias> heh. <Apol> |roll d20+7 <tafal> 18 | [d20=11] [+7=7] * Foster is caught unawares. As always. <DM> Okay, everyone except Foster... <Erias> I think that was my 3, actually <Foster> is Tafal LIFO or FIFO? :p <Fordran> FIFO <Foster> then it's mine. <DM> Someone has come up to the congregation after you, and is standing at the back anxiously. <DM> He's dressed in the town constable uniform. * Fordran turns to the constable. * Erias turns to the constable as well. "Hello, sir." * Foster continues to loiter. * Vita bows to the constable * Erias glances back at the altar. <DM> "Er, hi. Is the funeral service over?" * Fordran looks at the altar, back at the constable. <DM> There's a collective sigh from the congregation. <Fordran> "Ah... hello... funeral? Is that what this is?" <DM> Many of them look enraptured. * Fordran is talking in a low voice so as not to be intrusive. <DM> The constable looks at Fordran carefully. * Apol keeps the monocle and stays quiet. <DM> "New in town?" <DM> "Uh, well, yeah." <DM> The priest is speaking again. <Fordran> "Oh. Yes, we're new. We... oh." * Fordran quiets. <DM> "The sacrament..." <Erias> "I think it's -- " (quetly) "oh." <DM> The congregation begins to line up. * Foster will wait quietly in back. <DM> The younger priest is holding the goblet as the older priest pours from the same carafe. * Vita shakes her head a little and tries to hide inobtrusively <DM> Members of the congregation are approaching, sipping from the goblet, and then walking out of the Temple quietly, with a look of peace on their faces. <Vita> |roll d20+17 <tafal> 36 | [d20=19] [+17=17] * Apol whispers to Fordran, "Can we get some? They are giving it away?" <DM> Is that a hide roll? <Fordran> "I don't know if it's a good idea to drink it, Apol." <Vita> (yes) <DM> |roll d20 <tafal> 16 | [d20=16] <Foster> (Vita successfully hides in her own shadow) <Erias> "I do want to talk to the priests, though." <DM> random leaving congregation member: "It is the Light of the Eternal Orb, as safe as fresh spring water." <DM> To Fordran, as she leaves. <Fordran> "Ah. Yes. Thank you." * Erias grimaces. <DM> (I take it people are waiting for everyone to clear out?) * Fordran waits patiently. <Foster> indeed. * Vita waits * Erias will approach when the line has dwindled to just about nothing, and wait for them to finish. <DM> After administering the sacrament, the older priest hands the carafe back to the younger priest, and walks behind a curtained off section into the back of the temple. <DM> The younger priest waits around and speaks to some of the lingering congregation members, until they leave. * Erias will try to approach the younger priest before he leaves. * Fordran follows Erias. <DM> The younger priest stands expectantly at the front, looking at the constable. * Vita doesn't plan on going anywhere until people either leave or go further in * Erias glances back at the constable. * Vita just watches <DM> The constable walks up. <DM> He gestures you forward. <DM> er, Erias forward. * Erias approaches. * Foster will approach the priest, but wait for everyone else to finish their business. <DM> The younger priest looks at your tabard, then up at your face, and smiles. <DM> "Yes, my son?" <DM> (He's younger than you.) * Fordran blinks. <Erias> |roll d20+4 <tafal> 12 | [d20=8] [+4=4] <DM> What is that, will save not to clock him? <Erias> knowledge religion to call him "father" <DM> You have no idea. <Erias> "Hello, sir. I've journeyed a long way to visit your temple." * Erias smiles. <Fordran> |roll d20+9 <tafal> 24 | [d20=15] [+9=9] <DM> "Yes, of course. Servants of the Eternal in all His guises are always welcome." <Erias> "So then, we serve the same god after all." <DM> Sadly, Fordran, you know nothing about this religion either, being totally news to you, plotwise. But usually, when they call you "son," "father" works in reverse. <Erias> "I bring greetings from the Order of the Radiant Knights of Pelor." <Erias> (I think that's what they were.) <Erias> (And I figured my int check wasn't going to get me the "father" thing fast enough." <Erias> (although diplomacy might have.) <DM> "Then I greet you, Sir Knight. What may this humble servant of the Eternal Orb do for you?" <DM> He's about 5'6", short brown hair that looks like combing was attempted, brown eyes, complexion like he spent all day indoors. <Erias> "In part, I would greatly appreciate the chance to speak with you about the Church and learn more of your order." <Erias> "But I also seek a companion of mine, another Knight." <DM> "Certainly, we welcome all-- another knight?" <DM> He looks at your companions. <Erias> "Yawin is his name. I do not know if he made his way to the Church or not." <DM> He gestures at Fordran. "You mean him?" * Erias looks carefully at the priest. * Fordran looks surprised. "Me? No, I am not a Knight." <Erias> "No, Fordran is a loyal worshipper, but he has chosen a somewhat different path." <DM> "Oh, my apologies. I saw the armor, and... nevermind." * Foster is obviously not a knight, and probably not a Pelorite of any stripe just by looking at him. <Fordran> "An understandable error." <Vita> (Am I close enough to see/hear all this? Because I would probably try and move closer if I'm not) <DM> You have probably moved closer <DM> I assumed you did <DM> Since you said "until people move in": <Vita> Ok, I still didn't really want to be seen though <DM> Sure <DM> You're still hidden <DM> Maybe hiding behind a pew. * Apol is still sitting on Fordran's pack, kinda behind Fordran's head. <Vita> Nod. <Erias> "Do you know if another Knight of Pelor has visited recently, or if there is anyone else here I could ask?" <DM> "I haven't heard, but yes, Sub-Deacon Mozwell would know, that was he... er him? performing the service just now." <Fordran> "We're new in town... who was the service for, Father, if I might ask?" <DM> "One of the Eternal's beloved, a shoemaker by the name of Thurlen. Thurlen was ill last week, and missed his sacrament, you see, otherwise this would not be necessary." <Erias> "We would love the chance to speak in the Sub-Deacon, then, when we're done here." * Erias smiles. Light gleams on his teeth. * Erias stops smiling. <Erias> "His... wait." <Fordran> "Oh. I... see." <DM> He smiles, "You saw something very special today." <Fordran> "Can you explain to us what this sacrament is, Father?" <DM> The Eternal Orb blesses simple water, to be his Light and the Path to Our Salvation. <DM> Er in quotes. <DM> "When the vessel expires, the sacrament ensures that the soul passes directly to His Glory." <Fordran> "How often do the followers partake in the sacrament?" <DM> "As often as they wish, though the longer without it, the more likely it must be administered posthumously." <Fordran> "I see." <DM> The constable coughs politely. <DM> "May I just have a moment, Father? * Fordran turns. <Fordran> (undead!) * Erias steps back slightly. <DM> "Apologies, sir Knight, won't be a minute." <Erias> "Of course. No trouble." <Foster> (Foster turns undead, level drains the party into submission) <DM> To the priest: "Did Thurlen... do you know who killed him?" * Fordran looks at Erias, then at Foster. <Fordran> "...Killed?" <DM> The priest pulls out a folded piece of parchment from his robe. * Foster shrugs. <DM> "If Thurlen spoke to Sub-Deacon Mozwell, I'm sure he'll tell you." <DM> "Go on in and see him. <DM> Constable: "Right. Thank you, Father." <DM> To you guys: "My apologies for interrupting, good day." <DM> He walks anxiously through the curtain. * Erias turns to the priest. "Wait. I thought he was killed by... uh, a lack of sacrament." <DM> The priest tilts his head to the side for a moment, then chuckles. <DM> "Oh, no." <DM> "The sacrament ensures that the body and soul proceed to the Eternal Orb, but it does not prolong life." <Fordran> "Ahh. I understand." <DM> "The Orb ordains when our time is come, to prolong it unnaturally would be well.. unnatural." <Fordran> "So, normally, you would have administered to him in his last days, as a sort of last ritual." <Erias> |roll d20 <tafal> 8 | [d20=8] * Erias fails an int check and simply waits. <DM> "Well, normally, he would have attended service, and partook of the sacrament before his attack. Then he would not have left such a grisly sight for his children to find." <Fordran> "What happened?" <Erias> Light dawns. "Ohh." <DM> "I'm not exactly sure, though usually one of the priests speaks with the spirit before it joins with the eternal. Especially when foul play is involved." <DM> He looks kind of sheepish. <DM> "Though I admit it has never actually happened to me yet, but I'm relieved." <DM> "Other priests have said it happens at the most inopportune moments, you see." <DM> He blushes. <Fordran> "How long have you been a priest here?' <DM> He beams proudly "Six months in the priesthood." * Fordran nods. * Fordran turns to Erias. <DM> The constable comes rushing out from behind the curtain, parchment in hand. <DM> He nods to you and the priest as he heads out. <DM> listen check <Fordran> |roll d20+3 <tafal> 12 | [d20=9] [+3=3] <Erias> "Sir, you've been a great help." <Erias> |roll d20+1 <tafal> 16 | [d20=15] [+1=1] <Apol> |roll d20+7 <tafal> 15 | [d20=8] [+7=7] <Vita> |roll d20+11 <tafal> 27 | [d20=16] [+11=11] <Foster> |roll d20+1 <tafal> 9 | [d20=8] [+1=1] <Fordran> (woot! not the lowest!) <Foster> (You'll never be, with me around. My antiluck re: perception checks is beyond amazing) <DM> "It was a pleasure to help." <DM> "Oh yes, you wished to see the Sub-Deacon?" <Erias> "Yes, that would be great." <DM> "Let me fetch him for you." <DM> He waves at a last few stragglers and walks through the curtain. <Fordran> (/me has a weird Scarlet Monstery moment.) <DM> A few minutes later, Sub-Deacon Mozwell comes out, sans hat. <DM> Sub-Deacon Mozwell has chin-length blonde hair, combed tight against his skull, and startlingly bright blue eyes. <DM> And really straight teeth. * Vita keeps hiding * Erias unholsters his charisma. * Erias smiles and raises a hand in greeting. "Sub-Deacon!" * Fordran readies an action to ready his Charisma. <DM> Sub-Deacon Mozwell smiles his perfect smile at you. * Foster is sitting in a nearby pew, scribbling furiously in a notebook. <DM> "Ah yes, our valiant visiting knight from the Radiant Order of Pelor!" <DM> "How may I help you, good sir knight?" <Erias> "It's good to meet you as well, sir. I'm very impressed by the Church." <DM> "Ah, thank you for your kind words. The Light provides very well in times of need." <Erias> "Well, I had a few questions -- I'll try not to keep you long." <DM> "No, no. My time is yours. Please, ask away." <Erias> "First, I need to ask after a companion of mine. Another Knight, named Yawin, who may have visited the Church a week or two ago." <DM> "Yawin... Yawin..." <DM> "Ah yes! Yawin! Also of the Radiant Knights, yes?" <Erias> "He would have worn the symbol of Pelor -- and he was -- yes, that's right." <Erias> "You've seen him?!" <DM> "Hm, yes..." he has an apologetic smile. <DM> "How do I put this delicately..." <Erias> (I ate his soul.) <Fordran> (Erias... I am your father.) <DM> "He has come to join our congregation and serve the Eternal Light here." * Erias prepares himself for the worst." <Vita> (he went well with ketchup!) <Erias> (ooh. wasn't prepared for that.) <Erias> "I... see." <Foster> (Oh noes! Heresy!) * Fordran looks surprised. <Fordran> (omg nerf priests) * Erias takes it with apparent good grace. * Erias smiles slightly. "We each must find our own path." <Erias> "Where might I find him?" <Apol> (In the soup!) <DM> "As a man of action, he would likely be serving as a temple guardian. They're all off helping to clean out the sewer, I hear.." He grimaces in distaste. <Fordran> "Ah, the sewer. I understand there is some sort of rat infestation of some sort." <Erias> "Ah, yes!" (looks at Foster) "We were, in fact, going to offer our own assistance in that area. We heard you had a bit a trouble with some... pests?" <Fordran> ("We hear you're offering XP and shinies.") * Foster looks up, snapping his notebook shut and standing in one motion. <DM> "Yes. Though I hardly like to speak of it." He lowers his voice. <Erias> |roll d20+8 <tafal> 16 | [d20=8] [+8=8] <Erias> (suck.) <DM> "There are... things... down there, we're not sure from whence they came, but they appeared shortly after we completed the basement." <Fordran> "What things?" <Erias> "I see. More than rats, then." <DM> He gestures vaguely, "Things... if they have a name, I do not know it." * Foster raises an eyebrow slightly. <Foster> "Perhaps we could be of aid in elimiting your 'thing' problem." <DM> "Yes, certainly. We've sent word discreetly that we could use some specialized assistance, though you're the first to offer." * Erias nods. "We'd be happy to help. And given our shared alliegance, I personally feel that it is my duty to do what I can." <DM> "Excellent. Follow me, please." * Erias nods, waits for him to walk, and follows. <Fordran> /fol Erias * Foster follows along. <DM> He walks to the curtain, drawing it aside and holding it to let each of you pass into the chamber beyond. * Apol steps off the backpack and flies near the Sub-Deacon, "I have a question." <DM> He blinks in surprise. <DM> Regains composure. * Vita pops out, trying to be discrete, but probably failing <DM> "Yes?" * Vita tries to scurry through while he is distracted by Apol <DM> (you escape detection) <Apol> "Have you seen Bob? He's kinda like you and he likes pointy hats." <DM> "Uhhhhhmmmm..." <Apol> "They said he was in town, but he might have come here?" <DM> Perplexed. <Erias> "It's alright, sub-Deacon. Apol, I don't think he's seen Bob." <DM> "I'm afraid I don't kn--" <Apol> "Awww. Ok. I'm hungry. Do you think I can eat what's down there, Erias?" <DM> The chamber you enter into is about 10x40 <Fordran> (i cast Flamestrike.) <DM> It has hallways leading out from the 'long' ends <Foster> (I lightning bolt the hallways) <Erias> "If you can eat a cage, Apol, you can probably eat anything." <DM> There are three doors on the wall opposite the congregation room. * Apol giggles. <Erias> (oh no. <Erias> ) <DM> After Apol passes the curtain, he lets it drop, then walks into the left hallway, which leads to a flight of circular stairs. <DM> leading downwards. <DM> This ends one story down, in a mostly-empty cellar * Vita follows the other party members, lagging behind a little <DM> The floor is dirt, and one wall is unfinished. * Foster scuffs the floor with his foot a little. <DM> Chunks of stone and brick lie around the unfinished wall. <DM> There's a wall sconce with a torch here, and two humans in armor, with a tabard bearing the symbol of the Eternal Orb. <DM> Guards: "Father." <DM> Mozwell: "I've found some help for our unwelcome visitors. Please let them know how they can help." * Erias sizes them up, subtle-like. <DM> to you: "Well, I thank you for your assistance. I hope to see you all again soon." <DM> He smiles, and turns to leave. * Erias restrains himself. * Foster pauses, turns to the sub-deacon. <Fordran> (you don't have sneak attack.) <Erias> (I don't _need_ sneak attack.) <DM> (yeeees Foster?) <Erias> (brb bathroom; Erias autopilot = letting him go, greeting guards politely) <Foster> "Oh, just out of curiosity, did you have some sort of reward in mind for our assistance? I mean, I realize that some of our company" *tilts head towards Erias and Fordran* "may be motiveted purely by faith, but there are those of us without the heady ability to subsist on the sun's radiance alone." * Fordran chuckles. <DM> "Oh, of course. I thought we passed it along." <Fordran> (You will receive: 1s45c) <Foster> (Recipe: Crazy Glowing Holy Water) <DM> "Five silver per day each, 10 crowns each if you manage to completely stop the infestation." <Foster> "Ah. That should be quite sufficient, I'd think. Thank you." <Erias> (back) <DM> He smiles amiably, nods, and walks upstairs. * Erias shrugs, turns to the guards. <DM> Once he's out of apparent earshot, one of the guards, the shorter one sizes you up. * Erias bows. "Greetings." * Vita nods politely at the guards <DM> He nods at you politely. <DM> He looks down at Vita. * Foster glances at the guards, stows his notebook in one of the pockets in his bag. <DM> "It might...not... be safe for you, little one." * Apol flies up to one of the guards, "What's in there? Is it good to eat?" <DM> The other one nudges him. "It's not exactly safe for us either." * Foster flagrantly has no weaponry beyond inkstained hands. * Vita smiles sweetly "I can take care of myself" <Erias> "Apol, slow down." <DM> The guard jerks back. * Vita pulls out a small shortbow, from... somewhere <Fordran> (it was probably visible, already.) * Apol flies back, "Ok. I'll sit on your pack." <Vita> (probably) <Erias> "Sure, that's fine." <Erias> "There's some dried rations inside if you're hungry." <DM> The taller guard shrugs, counts out five glowing vials. <DM> "Here. I don't know if you've had your sacrament lately, but here, in case you're in there for awhile." <DM> (Wait, four) * Fordran tries to gesture at the holy symbol hanging at his waist. <DM> (He's probably not counting Apol) * Apol takes Erias on the offer and dives in the bag looking for rations. * Vita takes the vial gently but carefully, nodding her wary thanks <DM> He has a strange look cross his face. * Apol comes out and sees what's going on. <DM> To Fordran "You sure you don't want it?" * Apol flies to a guard, "Oh me me! * Foster will take the vial, stow it in his bag. <Erias> "Thank you, sir. I'd be happy to take one." <Fordran> "Apol will hold it for me. And not drink it, right Apol?" <DM> He shrugs, holds it out to Apol. <Apol> "Um... uh.. ok, fine." * Apol grabs the vial and hides it. <Erias> "So what are we in for?" <DM> They look at each other. <Vita> "And what do the "things" looks like, anyway?" <Fordran> "Don't say 'rats', because we know they're more than that." <DM> "We don't know what it is. It's about the size of a horse, maybe a big one, it's got tentacles like a squid." <Erias> "Uh." <DM> "We don't know if it's only one, but if it is, it keeps coming back." * Fordran looks confused. <Vita> "After you kill it?" <Erias> "Big horse with tentacles. Check." <Fordran> "How many have gone in there so far? Any of them make it back?" <DM> "It's not a horse... it's" he's reaching the depths of his imagination * Erias is imagining something very unpleasant. <DM> "Like... a large... mushroom with a beak" <Fordran> "Mushrooms don't have beaks." <Apol> "I like mushrooms." <DM> "I know that." <Foster> "Apparently this one does." <Vita> "Ok, horse, tentacles, mushroom, beak... got it" <Fordran> "...Oh. So, you mean like a mushroom that has a beak." * Vita looks very confused <Erias> "Alright, I don't think this is going to get any clearer." <Erias> "Where is it?" <Fordran> "We'll just look for the beaked tentacle horse mushroom." <DM> He gestures at the hole. <Foster> "Sounds like a very interesting creature. I look forward to seeing it in person." <DM> "In the sewers." <Erias> (oh, this is through the unfinished wall, then?) <DM> "It started coming up and dragging off the workmen <Vita> "Are you sure it isn't a tentacled mushroom horse with a beak?" <DM> (yes) <DM> "No. I mean yes. What?" <Foster> "I think we should probably get started, in any case." <Fordran> "I thought it was a beaked horse with mushroom tentacles." <Vita> "No. That would be too weird.: <Vita> " <Erias> "I know only one way to settle this." <DM> The other one steps in "It doesn't like light, or fire, we think." <Erias> (and it's probably going to take the tactical map and more time than I have tonight) <Fordran> (doh) * Erias grimaces. <Fordran> "Light or fire. Good to know." * Fordran looks into the hole. <Fordran> "Shall we, Erias?" <Fordran> (the hole has a blue swirly) <Erias> "I've been trying to learn prayers of sunlight, but..." <Erias> "Let's go." <Foster> "Alright." * Fordran zones. <Vita> "To battle." <DM> You see a broad tunnel, the 'floor' of which is runoff water. * Foster follows Erias in. * Vita taps at Erias once they are past the guards <DM> It's dark in here. * Vita motions for him to lean down * Erias leans down. <Fordran> (are there any rocks or such here?) <DM> Not that you can see. * Vita whispers to Erias * Apol follows and can see just fine in the dark. <Fordran> "Pelor, light our path!" (light on my buckler) <Fordran> (duration 1 hour) * Foster fishes in his pocket for a small leather pouch, shakes out a coin that burns like a torch, ties it onto his shoulder with a thong through the hole in the middle. <DM> Fordran's buckler shines brightly, keeping the area lit * Fordran readies his buckler. <Fordran> "Onward, then." <Fordran> (bright light 20', dim light to 40') <DM> Splash splash splash. <Erias> (once we're out of earshot) <Erias> "I don't trust the Sub-Deacon." <Fordran> "I don't trust any of them." <Erias> "I mean... I just have this feeling about him. A really bad feeling." <Foster> "They're shifty." <Vita> "This sacrament stuff creeps me out" <Fordran> "Yeah." <Fordran> (splash splash splash.) <DM> listen check * Erias pulls out his mace. <Fordran> |roll d20+3 <tafal> 7 | [d20=4] [+3=3] <Vita> |roll d20+11 <tafal> 19 | [d20=8] [+11=11] <Erias> |roll d20+1 <tafal> 5 | [d20=4] [+1=1] <Foster> |roll d20+1 <tafal> 7 | [d20=6] [+1=1] <Apol> |roll d20+7 <tafal> 13 | [d20=6] [+7=7] <Foster> (aw, not lowest. that's a surprise) <Vita> "wait" * Fordran stops. <Vita> "I hear some clanking up ahead" * Apol hovers. <Vita> "Maybe some water, too" <Fordran> "We're standing in water." * Erias stops. * Vita looks down <Vita> "Oh. Right.: <Apol> |roll d20+7 <tafal> 19 | [d20=12] [+7=7] * Foster stops. <Vita> "Someone's coming" (whisper) <Fordran> "Someone? That's better than a mushroom tentacle." <Vita> "Quickly?" <Apol> "Oh wait.. someone leaning on the wall.." <Erias> Any places to semi-hide, or... * Apol flys off. * Foster waits. <Fordran> "Where --" * Erias hisses "Apol--!" <DM> Apol disappears from the circle of light. * Fordran moves after Apol. * Erias moves after Fordran. * Vita follows Fordran <Apol> "Are you ok?" <DM> splishsplishsplishsplish * Foster follows. <DM> As the light sources approach, you see an armored figure leaning against the tunnel wall <DM> Some dark stains are coming from the creases in his armor. <Fordran> "Hello? Are you hurt?" <DM> Well. Its. <DM> It coughs. * Fordran moves in closer. * Erias moves toward the figure. <Erias> "Yawin?" <Apol> "He's not talking." * Vita hangs back, although still in the light <DM> It shakes its head. <DM> "Eri..as?" * Erias runs forward. * Fordran keeps up with Erias. * Vita keeps up with the trailing edge of the light <DM> He wipes a gauntleted hand across his face, rubbing off some ichor. <Erias> "Hold on!" <DM> He winces as the light approaches. <DM> He straightens up. <DM> "I'm ... alright." <Fordran> "Do you need healing?" <DM> "No! Let us help you." <DM> "Nothing, I had a run-in with the thing, scared it off." * Apol sniffs at Yawin, "You smell sick." <Fordran> "The thing? Did you get a look at it?" <DM> Yeah. <DM> "Yeah." <Vita> "Sir, you should really let people help you if you are sick" <DM> "The body is... what? I'm okay, really." <DM> "Anyway, the body is about 10 feet around, like some sort of bloated sack." <Fordran> "Looks like it got you pretty bad. I have a healing wand. Let me help." <Erias> "I'm sure you are, but they'll feel better if you let them help. They like to feel useful. I would be a generosity on your part, honestly." <DM> "No, really, I'm alright, save it for yourselves." <Erias> |roll d20+8 <tafal> 25 | [d20=17] [+8=8] <DM> "I... alright." <Apol> "Does he need sacrumbents?" <DM> "No! Kidding.) <Erias> (us -> me, we -> I is the rule of thumb, isn't it?) <DM> "I greet you, Fordran." <Fordran> (basically. you should be able to remove the "foo and" and it should still work.) <Fordran> "Pelor's light shine upon you, Yawin." <Erias> (to Yawin) "He is a true servant of Pelor. But I will speak with you alone if you wish." <DM> "Yes, Erias, but... not now. <DM> "You are here for the thing, are you not?" <DM> "You did not expect to find me here." * Vita nods <Erias> "We are here for the creature. We hoped to find you as well." <Vita> "Oh. Right... we had heard that, hadn't we..." <DM> "It should be attracted to the splashing. Dim the torches too, I think it's beginning to shy from armed men with lights." * Fordran looks at his buckler. <Fordran> "How are we supposed to find our way around, then?" <DM> "Or... leave it, it must have a lair down here." * Vita is on follow mode, she needs to go to the bathroom <Erias> "Though I hesitate to help this church, we did agree to attempt to kill this thing. Would you really have us leave it behind?" <DM> "I meant his light." gestures at Fordran's buckler. <DM> "He can keep his light if he can't see in the dark." <Fordran> "I can't." <DM> "Then you can keep your light." <Fordran> "If it's our only source of light, it might not scare it off as much as a group of guards with torches." * Erias says, carefully, "Most of us can't see in the dark, Yawin." * Fordran muses, "Can Elves?" * Fordran muses some more. "Can you, Apol?" <Apol> "I can see. Want me to go find this thing?" <Fordran> "No. Stay with us." <DM> Yawin is silent. <Apol> "Ok" <Foster> "It's probably not smart to split up with some big tentacled nasty lurking in the shadows." <Vita> "I agree." <Erias> (As a side note, I'm not going to be able to stay up much longer) <DM> (righto) * Erias kicks the water, making a splashing sound. "So do we wait for it?" <Vita> "Maybe we should pick where we'll fight?" <Fordran> "I'd rather find it than the other way around." <Foster> "Let's hunt for its lair. I'd rather fight the thing in an open space." <Fordran> "Yawin... will... you be okay here?" <Vita> "Me too." <DM> "I will come with you." * Fordran looks at Erias. <Erias> "Come with us. I think it's best that we all stick together." <Fordran> "Are you sure you're all right to come with us?" <Erias> "Just a moment." * Erias pulls Fordran aside. <DM> Right, if there's whispering going on, I'd like a copy prz~ * Vita looks thoughtful as she realizes that she went from wandering in the forest to lurking in dirty sewers to wait for nasty horse mushroom things with bloated tentacles * Vita makes it clear that she's respecting the conversation's privacy * Erias looks up. <DM> Yawin looks up at Erias. * Erias smiles. <Erias> "Let's go, then, and do what must be done." * Erias nods at Fordran. <Fordran> "Let's find this thing, then. Can you lead us to where you last saw it, Yawin?" <DM> "Yes, not far from here, after the split." <DM> As you follow Yawin in the sewers, a rotten smell begins to overpower your sense of smell. And it must be pretty bad because your sense of smell was already inured to the smell of sewage. * Fordran coughs. * Vita grimaces. Repeatedly. * Foster wrinkles his nose slightly. * Apol braces against the smell, yes, even the lizard is overwhelmed. <DM> *thwip* *clangsplash* *shuffff* <DM> In an instant, Yawin is dragged forward into the darkness <Fordran> "Yawin!" <Erias> "Yawin!" <DM> Aaaand.. cut. <Erias> (in unison, I presume) <Erias> (that's a wrap, folks.) * Vita pauses in mid-alarmed expression * Fordran Gates in a Solar. * Apol doesn't get to hiss and doesn't get to fly straight for the tentacle in the water. <Erias> well, not yet anyway. <Erias> Thanks for the session, guys. That was fun. <DM> Okay, I'm actually pretty satisfied <Foster> woo. <Fordran> woot. <Vita> Yay! <Apol> :) <DM> I got to *glee* at many exclamations of surprise and dismay tonight. <Apol> heh * Fordran is surprised. * Erias is dismayed. * Fordran is dismayed that he's surprised. <Foster> Or, you know, laugh at my silly /tell comments. :p * Vita is gleeful * Erias is surprised that he's dismayed. * Fordran is sad that he's Flying. * Erias is flying that he's... hey... wait a minute. * DM polymorphs Fordran into a Tuaric... elephant.. thing? <DM> What is strong sad? <Foster> Fat. <Foster> And wearing those elephant foot slippers. <Apol> hee <DM> For those confused about what's going on with the church and the funerals and stuff <DM> The official version that you'll get if you talk to a constable <DM> The followers don't leave corpses <DM> That makes their job difficult if they suspect murder <Foster> Was going to say, they must hate that. <DM> The church releases a name, and/or description to the authorities when they say the death was unnatural <DM> Usually, the named party either confesses, or is a known criminal, so they can't be trusted anyway. <DM> Since Speak With Dead isn't unknown in the world, it's an accepted procedure, at least for followers of the church. <DM> This makes followers somewhat less appealing targets <Foster> (I thought that Speak With Dead required a corpse, but hey, playing Dungeons and Randolph here. :P) <DM> What I'm saying is, if they believe Speak With Dead, then this isn't a stretch <DM> I'm not saying that they're using Speak With Dead. <Fordran> It's actually Speak with Fred. <DM> Average officer of the law does not have Spellcraft. <Foster> true enough. <DM> Yeee...s. <DM> Speak with Fred. <DM> "You cast Speak with Fred! Hi Fred!" <DM> Anyway, that's their system, it's new, it's weird, and the constables that aren't believers are kind of uncomfortable with it <Fordran> i'm kind of uncomfortable with it. <Fordran> ("I don't think I want any more.") <DM> But it seems to work, and nobody's complaining, and the church people are happy and fewer people are dying. <Fordran> In fact, some of them never truly die at all. <DM> Well, no.
